Auckland Film and Movie-Set Location

Motutara Homestead, Auckland sheep farm

Over the years Motutara Farm & Homestead has been used for various film and movie shoots, and magazine publications. The draw card for this is not only our close proximity to Auckland, but that our fixtures are historic and authentic. Many Producers report that to replicate the “age aspect” (for example our woolshed), it would cost a whole lot of money to do so! With more and more film scenes being shot in New Zealand these days, we are able to provide a genuine filming location. Read what we have to offer… Motutara Farm and Homestead is located just 40 minutes from downtown Auckland. The region is in the Muriwai Valley, and just 7 minutes from Muriwai Beach. The farm’s history dates back to the 1880’s. The Homestead has been renovated, with an open plan, but retains the Colonial ambiance. The farmland is typical New Zealand pasture, parts with hills and parts flat. There’s an impressive view of the valley to be seen from the South West highground, and from behind the farm buildings there’s a good 240 degrees of uninterrupted horizon. A quaint stream (naturally vegetated) bisects most of the property. This is Okiritoto Stream (the same stream which flows out to Muriwai Beach).  There are numerous sheds and buildings dotted around the farm (all in close range to the Homestead). Tractor sheds are filled with typical farming equipment…(and old “junk” !!!). The farm woolshed was built in 1930 and is still in original condition supporting holding pens, 2 shearing stands (with Lister brand shearing plants), wool-bins and a manually-operated wool press (1950). The farm carries 150 sheep and during lambing season (July/Aug – Dec), there are lambs (usually ones to bottle feed too). Many of these sheep are tame. There are also working dogs.
